What is eye bag removal surgery?
Eye bag removal surgery, also called lower blepharoplasty, is an operation that treats the bulging fat pads under the eyes. The surgeon either removes a small amount of excess fat or moves it into the hollow below (the tear trough), so the lower eyelid looks flatter, smoother and less tired.
When skin elasticity is good, the surgery can usually be done through a small incision on the inside of the eyelid, leaving no visible scar. When there is loose skin or fine wrinkling, an incision just below the lash line allows the surgeon to tighten the skin at the same time.

Does eye bag removal surgery leave a scar?
With the transconjunctival method the incision is inside the eyelid, so there is no visible external scar. The external method uses a fine incision just below the lashes, which usually becomes hard to notice as it heals.
Is eye bag removal painful?
The surgery is performed under local anaesthesia with sedation, so most patients feel little during the operation. Afterwards, tightness and mild discomfort are common for a few days and are usually managed with prescribed medication.
How long is the recovery?
Most swelling and bruising settle within about 1–2 weeks, and many patients return to social activities around then. Mild swelling can continue for several weeks, and the final result is usually seen at about 3 months.
How long do the results last?
Fat that has been removed or repositioned does not usually return, so results are typically long-lasting. Natural ageing of the skin and cheek continues, however, so the area will still change slowly over the years.
Removal or fat repositioning — which do I need?
If you have bulging fat with a deep groove below, repositioning often gives a smoother result than removal alone. If you mainly have puffiness with no hollow, careful removal may be enough. Your surgeon decides after examining your eyelids.

What are the risks?
